Killorglin/Iveragh played Listowel RFC in the quarter final of the West Munster Cup. Killorglin/Iveragh kicked off and put good pressure on winning a turn over and quick hands got Colin Griffin over for the first try. Listowel kick the restart and a knock on got them a scrum inside our 10 where there number 8 got over for their first try. Killorglin/Iveragh kick off and again Listowel put on forward pressure to get in under the post. Killorglin/Iveragh regrouped again and won a scrum from the restart where fast ball got out to our backs which got Adam over for a try. The score a half-time Killorglin/Iveragh 10 Listowel 12.
Listowel kicked off the 2nd half and with some hard rucking and fast ball got Adam over for his second try which was converted by Colin Griffin. Listowel came at Killorglin/Iveragh hard but Killorglin/Iveragh turned over the ball inside our 5 but a knock on gave Listowel a scrum just outside our own 5 meter line which saw their number 8 level the game with 3 mins to go. Killorglin/Iveragh kicked off and fought hard to keep Listowel out and then won a turn over. Listowel then caused a penalty and that was the last play of the game.
The game ended level 17 points each but because Killorglin/Iveragh scored the first try they are now through to the semi-finals. The team really stood up, only giving away 1 or 2 penalties. Well done to all involved!
U16
Killorglin U16s faced Killarney in the West Munster Cup semi-final last Saturday. Killarney were on a high following their Munster Development Cup final win the previous weekend while Killorglin were badly hit by illness and injury and only just able to muster the bare 15. The visitors raced into a 12 point lead within 5 minutes, capitalizing on some poor tackling, but the home side forced their way back into the game and had the better of the rest of the first half. Jack O’Brien got in for the first Killorglin try. Then Peadar Whelan crashed over in the corner for another after sustained possession and recycling from Killorglin, and James Byrne produced a great kick to convert. Killarney replied, and at half time the score stood at 12-19. In the second half Killorglin chased the game a bit too hard, made too many mistakes and the powerful and well organised visitors were only too happy to capitalize, leaving the final score a lopsided 12-40. Whatever the result there was a lot to admire in the home team’s performance, if not much consistency. With so many of our big ball carriers missing Mike Teahan, JP Courtney and Peadar Whelan really stepped up in the pack, and Ben O’Dwyer had a good game on his return from a lengthy injury-enforced absence. Ruari Dorrian always looked dangerous in possession and was a little unlucky not to get on the score sheet, while Joe Cronin-Langham lit things up with his running and stepping. James Byrne produced a captains display as he has done all year. Season over now for the U16s. We look forward the break and to seeing these players in action again come the autumn.
