The Killorglin U16 team made the journey to Thomond Park on Saturday morning to contest the Munster Development Plate Final against their Waterford City counterparts.
Killorglin hit the ground running from the off with Daniel Fenton and Jack Morris both bagging a brace of tries. This was achieved through pressure in defence and good interplay between back and forwards. Waterford City came back strongly but Killorglin stood firm in defending their line, including a last gasp tackle out wide with the last play of the first half. In between, captain Dara O'Connor crashed over the line after Killorglin regained an overthrown lineout.
The teams were again evenly matched after half-time until Jack Morris backed up a Diarmuid Riordan penalty kick by returning the subsequent kick-off to complete his hat-trick. Waterford City responded with a well worked try of their own. However, Charlie O'Neill rounded off a memorable day for Killorglin with a try in the corner off the back of a scrum, reminiscent of the late Anthony Foley.
Dara O'Connor fulfilled his duties by hoisting the trophy aloft and delivering an eloquent oration amongst jubilant scenes in front of the East Stand.
Firstly, we would like to acknowledge the graciousness and sportsmanship displayed by the Waterford City team and management in defeat and we wish them all the best in the future.
Secondly, we'd like to thank Munster Rugby and the Thomond Park staff on the day for facilitating the players to fulfill their dreams. We'd also like to thank the referee Bertie Assia for his clear communication with the players.
Thirdly, a sincere thank you to all the club members and supporters who turned out on the day. In particular we'd like to acknowledge the players' parents and families for their help and support throughout the year. A special mention also to Donnacha Foley who travelled as our designated photographer and his images will help to rekindle precious memories for years to come.
Finally, after a sorrowful week for the club, we'd like to acknowledge the enormous contribution the late Andrew Eadie made to Killorglin RFC. The trophy we won on Saturday was a legacy of his efforts. We thank Munster Rugby for allowing a minute's silence before the game in his memory. Speaking with officials on the day, it was clear the regard with which was held not just in West Munster but throughout the Province. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.
